Wuhan-Guangzhou Line

The problem

China has an ambition to expand the capability of its railways; to shorten intercity rail travel times and build a faster rail network that spans the entire country. In tandem with a new standard CTCS3, for high speed lines, the speed and capacity of the train network would be increased dramatically but would be dependent on the latest on board and wayside technology.

The solution

In just over two years, 1,069km of line went into service, providing 60 services a day and operating at speeds of up to 350 kph - making it the fastest ERTMS level 2 system in commercial operation and on the world's longest VHS.

The technology selected, was the Bombardier Interflo 450; delivering advanced ERTMS level 2 implementation as well as efficiency - thanks to the superior capacity of the EBI Com Radio Block Centre (RBC). The technology also delivers the highest safety level for railway operation (Safety Integrity Level 4) as well as interoperability with the previous CTCS2, providing a safety backup.

Following the success of the Wuhan Guangzhou line, Bombardier's Interflo 450 technology has now been installed in more than 10,000 km of VHS track and on 330 trains throughout the country.
